Useful Tips

I would suggest the following items to help make you more comfortable after jaw surgery.

1) Free Flow Sippy Cup
Ensure you buy a free flow sippy cup before the operation, you will have numb lips and won't be able to use a regular cup or glass and you won't be able to suck through a straw. My sippy cup gave me my food and drink for many weeks post op.

2) Babies weaning spoon
When you move onto slops these weaning spoons are the perfect shape to assist you getting food into your mouth

3) Syringes
You will need to keep your mouth as clean as possible, I found squirting water and mouthwash into my mouth was the best way to keep everything clean
(You will need to hold a bowl under chin to catch the water or mouthwash)

4) Absorbent pads
These pads are very similar to puppy training pads, during the first few weeks when dribbling was a real issue I always had one of these wrapped round me. Of a nighttime I place them over my pillows and shoulder to catch the dribble.

5) Baby toothbrush
Get some baby toothbrushes, not only are they smaller than a regular toothbrush, the bristles are also very soft and there is less chance of hurting the scar inside your mouth.

6) Tissues with balm
During the dribbling stages you are forever wiping your lips and chin, tissues with balm on are much kinder to the skin and prevent a dribble rash

7) Medicated Lip balm
Due to the dribbling my lips got very dry and chapped, start rubbing a balm onto your lips as soon as you can to prevent painful, cut, chapped lips.

8) Scarf
I had my operation in December so it was very cold, every time I left the house I would wrap a scarf around my face to...
1) Keep everything warm
2) Prevent infection
